The sermon series entitled Faith in Action was delivered from August 18 to December 29, 2019. The New Testament consistently identifies salvation as coming through faith in the risen Christ. For example, the apostle Paul taught that we are saved by grace through faith not works (Romans 3:28, Ephesians 2:8-10), and in perhaps the most widely known verse in all of Scripture (John 3:16) Jesus said "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." According Scripture, faith in Christ not only opens the door to salvation but it characterizes the entirety of the life of the true Christian (Galatians 2:20). We walk by faith not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), faith is how the righteous live (Hebrews 10:38), and in fact without faith it is even impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
From beginning to end the Christian life is a life of present and abiding faith. The logical, and practical, question becomes what does this look like? The letter of James was written to answer this very question of what genuine faith looks like. James is both deeply challenging and profoundly encouraging. In the introduction to his commentary on James, New Testament scholar Douglas Moo wrote, "James’s call for consistent and uncompromising Christian living is much needed. Our churches are filled with believers who are only halfhearted in their faith and, as a result, leave large areas of their lives virtually untouched by genuine Christian values. Nor am I immune to such problems." With this in mind we turned to the letter of James to learn how to live lives of faith in action so that we can live lives to the fullness that is possible in Christ. The audio files of our sermons along with the accompanying slides are linked below with the most recent on top.
